2006....

Merry Christmas, Baby!

Christmas in Cowpens starts it off for 2006

Christmas came a tad early to the Queens this year with the massive renovations to our float, the Hunny Leigh. With newly installed canopy, lights, disco ball and generator, the party barge of the Queens is now ready for any and all celebrations. In computer terms, this incarnation of the Hunny Leigh is Float 5.0.

As for parades, Cowpens started the season off well, with our Spartanburg parade having been moved from the Friday after Thanksgiving to December 12th. The Cowpens hometown crowd was as joyous as ever. We heard lots of happy shout-outs and complements.

Greenville Poinsettia Parade is a festival of lights
(or lack thereof)

Another wonderful event greeted us in Greenville on December second with the Poinsettia Parade. Huge crowds and a great reception made for a special evening --and our first night parade in a few years. But just like that last night parade, the electronics got testy and failed, leaving us with the street lighting and weak sound. With Mr. Tea with his head in the in the back of float, it was eventually restored. The atmosphere was magical, with lights throughout the trees, and a very intense Christmas spirit all around.

Sparkle City lives up to its name

Spartanburg's Christmas parade was probably the best attended we can remember. The Queens heard more friendly shout-outs than ever! The weather was fabulous, too! The whole parade was in doubt for us, with BSTQ having just been released from the hospital a number of the other Queens having personal issues and the parade being on a Tuesday night. But we managed to gather three and some excited boys (thanks to the Lord Chamberlain Herb), and the show went on!

Spartanburg Bands Together for a display of green sequins

On a wonderful October afternoon in the City of Sparkles, some fine folks got together for a locally driven fundraiser called Spartanburg Bands Together 2. Last year's event benefited victims of hurricane Katrina, but this year's event was set up to help establish the Spartanburg Music Trail. The proposed Music Trail will be a series of plaques around town to commemorate Spartanburg's notable musicians that graced our town through the years. The Queens were anxious to be a part of this event. For most of the afternoon we were stationed at the ticket tables, bringing bright flashes of green and hot pink to those approaching. Later, we got up on stage to shimmy to "Let's Dance" (the David Bowie song), performed by The Watts.  We look forward to next year when we will propose a fundraiser to paint the Montgomery Building in sparkly green paint with a row of hot pink lights across the top and some 8 foot tall fringe draping over the second floor.

TeanaAngie whips up Queenly fervor for Relay For Life

Our own TeanaAngie whipped up her own Sweet Tea Queendom for a day at her workplace, Robert Allen Designs in Gaffney. Raising funds for Relay For Life, TeanaAngie enlisted the help of an STQ-wannabe and four security studs for a pink and green parade around the office. They raised $240 in a day-- good job!!

Surprise visit to Chik-Fil-A scores photos with Cocky!

Our local Chik-Fil-A restaurant featured the University Of South Carolina mascot "Cocky" as a guest on September 12. Little did they know that several Sweet Tea Queens would show up, too. After all, BSTQ's youngest son, affectionately known as "The Spare" is now a freshman at USC, so it's only right that we pay homage to the cartoon embodiment of the school. After that soiree, we strutted our tail feathers on down to Tractor Supply Co., where our very own "Herbal Tea" made a grand presentation of a new tarp covering for the STQ Float, lovingly known as the CSS Hunny Leigh.

Happy King Apple welcomes delicious Queens
With a photo and a paragraph in the Hendersonville Times News the week before, the folks at the King Apple Parade were ready and happy to welcome the STQs with hoots and hollers! Just like the year before, the rain held off until the parade was over. With fantastic crowd reaction, the Queens really got some shimmyin' action going on, especially Virgin Queen Teana Angie.

Peach Parade serves fun by the bushel
On a roll with fabulous summer parades, the South Carolina Peach Festival parade proved itself as one of the best around. In spite of the threat of rainy weather, the parade went off without a hitch. Parade Virgin Teana Stacey got her float legs as a very enthusiastic crowd welcomed the queens to Gaffney.

In the Moooo-d! Queens swing to a mighty good crowd
To start off the summer parade season, you couldn't have picked a better venue than the Cowpens Mighty Moo parade. Record-setting attendance and a huge line-up made 2006 the best Moo ever.

Easley's Spring Fling features a "Queens only" parade
No sooner has Spring made it's official appearance than the Queens are a feature at the Easley, SC Spring Fling. In it's third year, this upstate festival features music, vendors and kids' rides. The Queens held a one-float police-escorted parade through downtown and then popped up on stage to sing and dance. Through much of the day they sold Mardi Gras beads to benefit local charities. Later they joined in with the band "Encore" for a jam session.
